Objective Of The Game

Each player attempts to get their card total as close to 21. If their card total goes over then they have busted and lose. If their cards are closer to 21 than the dealer then they win. If the dealer’s cards are closer to 21 then the player loses.

Card Values

The player can decide if the ace in their hand is worth either 1 or 11. Face cards all equal 10. The other cards in deck are equal to their pip value.

Before the beginning of a deal the players each place their chip bets. The limits in terms of minimum and maximum bets vary from casino to casino.

The Shuffle And Cut

The deck is thoroughly shuffled by the dealer. A player is asked to cut. An insert card is placed within the deck, preventing the last 60-75 cards being used. This stops card counting.

The Deal

After all bets have been placed each player is dealt one face up card, including one for the dealer. A second round of dealing gives each player a second face up card. However, the dealer’s second card is face down.

A natural blackjack occurs when the player’s cards include an ace and a ten-card. He is then paid one and a half times his bet by the dealer. If the dealer has a natural blackjack he takes all the bets of players without naturals. If both the dealer and the player have naturals then it is a tie. The player is given back his bet.

The Play

The player to the left of the dealer is the first one to play. If he does not want another card he “stands”. He “hits” if he does want additional cards. These “hits” are dealt one at a time until the player either busts or stands. If he busts he loses. If his card is closer to 21 than the dealer’s he wins.
